This course introduces students to core concepts and problems in politics and policymaking. Among the questions we address: What determines political preferences and electoral outcomes? How are interests represented? How do political institutions shape policy outcomes? We focus on tools that students should be able to apply broadly in analyzing the political world.
We will review the major ideas of political science and provide a foundation for future study. We will examine the tools, concepts, and theories that allow students to make sense of the political world. The course will have a focus on political science/political theory, with courses on comparative politics, and political economy, as well as a focus on the political philosophy of ethical issues and the law. Students will have opportunities to engage issues of policy via collaborative projects and debates. We will also focus on the application of these tools in real world settings through assignments, reading, and final research project.
Our course is designed to be advanced for students who have completed a first-year course in political science or another foundational course in political science, or a liberal studies course that covers a range of issues pertaining to political life. Students should be comfortable working in a lab setting and with the computer technology used in their classes.
This course aims to supplement existing courses in the political science major and is suitable for students who are seeking to gain a more advanced understanding of the political science discipline. It is intended as a successor to Principles of Political Analysis, which, along with our currently-available online course, Political Science, Theories and Methods , aims to produce a more theoretically-inclined student of politics, and this course combines aspects of both.
