John Cain, an 18 year old illiterate farmer, (John’s Papers) recounts his experience with the military. After a spell of service in the Civil War, he was offered a position of recruiter for the United States Military until 1866.
For John DePeyster, a Soldier in the 9th/15th New York Cavalry, the Civil War was love at first sight. A well-educated young man from upstate New York, he entered the service as a Brevet Captain, Company D, 9th New York Cavalry. John was the founder of the Society of the Sword and wrote a masterful standard history of the 15th New York Cavalry. In the midst of the war, while on a scouting mission on May 13, 1863, he married his beloved Ellen. But the war would not end with a wedding. Shortly after the marriage his scouting party was ambushed and he was shot through his upper arm. After he was treated at an Army field hospital, his service papers become the property of the Federal government. Though his wound healed in a few months, he was unfit for further service. Anxious to return to his wife, John sought a transfer to the Department of Texas. It was at that time that he voluntarily removed himself from the Army. After his discharge, he worked for the New York Central Railroad as a section hand, traveling the dirt roads and canals of the country.
The following excerpt from John DePeyster's Record is an example of the information available in modern records from one of NARA's offices.
