My students have been working with snowmen since last spring. I love snowmen and read the book Snowmen at Play to my class each week. I make sure they know the story of the Snowmen and use lots of repetition to help them remember. We have made snowmen out of different materials and I love how the kids have made their own unique snowmen.
On day three, we discussed and reviewed what the snowmen did at night. We also made some of these snowmen with our friends using the slushy snow. My students enjoyed it so much, they wanted to see if they could make their own snowmen!
We also read Thumbelina at night (this is part of the Thumbelina series ) and we discussed the character of the snowmen. I focused on Thumbelina's hero qualities and the amazing snow-creating machine that created the snowmen.
On day four, we read Thumbelina at Night using story sequence cards. After we read, we discussed the events of the story. We also reviewed the Thumbelina series together to analyze the character traits and events.
I decided to use this book as a way to build confidence and creativity in my kindergarten students. We have been doing a lot of worksheet type activities lately, especially for math and reading. I wanted to find a way to continue that practice while adding more art work. It was wonderful to see the look on my students' faces when they started to create the wonderful works of art they made with their snowmen.
