As a newlywed in the 1930s, girlfriend Helen Gahagan Douglas and her husband, actor Melvyn Douglas, struggled to keep one of the first of their two dogs from eating out of garbage cans and swimming into storm drains. In describing what happened, the New York Times reported, "The dog roots around in bins and sinks beneath the linden trees. Helen is wrathful. It was rare for children to witness street fights in 1950s New York. Not only were people more likely to get in their cars to drive away, but they were also more likely to fight in front of their children. One study estimated that only about 20 percent of its respondents had seen a fight in which they or someone else was punched and that only about 5 percent had witnessed a fight in which someone had been knocked down. However, the study showed that New Yorkers were willing to fight, but felt that their efforts wouldn't be appreciated by onlookers. Fourteen percent of those surveyed said that they wanted to fight someone, but that they had no opportunity to do so.
