Error codes (like "xlive.dll is missing") are an issue for some people and should also be resolved by these steps, but I did not experience any error codes. The same issues will inhibit your ability to play some other popular Games for Windows Live-enabled games, like Batman:ArkhamCity, Dark Souls, Bulletstorm, F1 2010/2011, DiRT 2, Fable, Section 8, Lost Planet 2, and Warhammer 40k titles.
A fake version of xlive.dll that allows you to play fable 3 single player without having games for windows - live installed. It fairly obviously isn't compatible with any multiplayer elements, and you wont be able to download any dlc/patches in game, whether free or otherwise.
UseDLC:This option is experimental, and may or may not work!Valid values are 0, 1 or 2, default 0. If 1, enables the use of the free DLC. First download a copy of the free DLC, then copy it to '\data\dlc\content'. After downloading from gfwl it'll be in '\Microsoft\XLive\DLC\\content', but you can copy the files from someone else if you don't have a gfwl account. Copy across all files in the content directory; there should be 40 of them in total.The paid for DLC (understone, etc.) is not supported.Note that after using this option, your save will become dlc dependent, and cannot be loaded without the dlc present. Due to the experimental nature of this option, I strongly recommend backing up your save games before switching it on.

Steam installs correctly.DowII downloads but at first launch it fails at configuration when installing Games for Windows - LIVE, takes a very long time, then a progress window appears (very slow progression) and after a while an error message from cxgames tells a program has crashed.Progress bar still continues to advance, albeit very slowly, but in the end it does nothing, never terminates even after the progress bar has reached the end. Cancel the progress window does not work. Had to close the Steam client and then terminate forcefully using cxgames 'Terminate applications' feature, normal reinitialization was not enough.
Same here, steam installs (had to install a firefox 3 for the bottle). downloads the game. launch, it, downloads games for windows live, tries to open it and nothing happens. i try launching the game again, and it downloads windows live again. I don't get any error message though.
Windows Live seems to be the big issue here.tbh it's also giving me big pains on my windows box too. Tried to let my kid play the other day but it wanted my CC details to verify I was his parent when he tried logging in using his windows live a/c.
I'll just chirp in here...I have another couple of games titles that areseemingly thwarted by gfwlive (in one or another of it's incantations),and there's a ticket I have open which is somewhat related...see;
fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100Trying to load PE image for unsupported architecture (Unknown-01c2)err:module:import_dll Loading library MSASN1.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\xlive.dll") failed (error c000007b).err:module:import_dll Library xlive.dll (which is needed by L"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dawn of war 2\DOW2.exe") not founderr:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\dawn of war 2\DOW2.exe" failed, status c0000135
It seems that xlive.dll is needed, Please note that this game does not require a Xlive (or is it called Xbox live?) login to be played in Campaign mode, nor a connection to windows servers, so there might be a "way around it" I'm unaware of. Hopefully these messages above will help troubleshooting this issue.
series...I probably reported it on the associated ticket...yeah, I did,just checked..but you probably won't be able to view it. To summarizethat ticket's current standing, you can get around the msasn1.dll/xlive.dllthang..but...as GFWlive pretty much tracks where the .NET implementation'currently' is in windows, I'm pretty sure it's still failing because therequired dependency of .NET 3.5 (and service packs) are not yet supportedin crossover/wine. In that regard, and quoting CupCake Ninja from saidticket.."Currently .Net 3.5 is held up by us fixing our installation of.Net 2.0 sp1. Once that begins to install properly, we will be able toagain focus on .Net 3.5. Hopefully we get there soon!"...
using CrossOver Games 9.0 you will be able to use that to install xlive.dll. NOTE: xlive.dll still needs MSASN1.dll. There is no package to install that. You will need to copy it from your windows machine/vm into your bottles windows/system32 directory.
Xlive.dll is a system file necessary for some games to work in a Windows environment. This file is part of the Games for Windows - Live program, which is necessary for connecting games with the online gaming service from Microsoft. Accordingly, if this file is not in the system, and it is necessary for some game (without it the game is not started), the most correct solution is to reinstall or install this program. 2b1af7f3a8
