In this game, you open a small little game center / arcade. As you gain new regular customers, they level up and even compete with each other. You get to design your arcade, unlocking and placing new machines, which you can level up to strength their effects.
An updated re-release, Pocket Arcade Story DX, was released in 2018 for Android and iOS devices. This re-release rebalances some aspect of the game while apparently removing the ability to build custom arcade games. Tournaments are also slightly revamped, there is now an overworld map and multiple tournaments are offered at the same time. Additionally, this version of the game is only free-to-start and certain functionality are locked behind a paywall.
Here comes a new challenger: it's the arcade simulation game you've been waiting for! Build your very own gaming paradise packed with heaps of game machines and more!If some of your customers become regulars, you can test their mettle in fighting game tournaments. What old school video game fan hasn't ever wanted to have their own arcade Back in the days of the X-Box 360 there was a game called Arcadecraft, which had potential-but my version crashed hard and lost hours of save data. But I saw Pocket Arcade Story here on the E-Shop and thought it might scratch the itch to have my own little arcade again.
You start with a modest little arcade, creating your first employee (along with choosing their Character; more on that later). The game's goal is to build it up to a 5-Star, super famous and successful mega-game center. You have three games-one each of a generic platformer, space shooter, and totally-not-Street Fighter II. You can set the game difficulties, which can add different levels of skill and enjoyment to your customers. Games unlock slowly-sometimes as time progresses, some are gifts for reaching new Star levels, some are tournament prizes, and some come by growing your community.
At first you just want more games to choose from, but for the first few in-game years you're limited. The game doesn't tell you to network your customers-holding Mixers allows them to increase their stats, build more activity and game levels for the arcade, and make friends. Every five friends someone makes can lead to new games, new ad campaigns, and gifts with various uses. A surprising amount of the game's progress is tied to its fighting game tournaments.
Every character has a favorite character, from an initial pool of three or four, and build from F to S rank by fighting more and more. You'll encounter new opponents, whom will later become customers, gain money and fame for your arcade, and earn prizes. But you don't quite directly fight-the \"player\" in game has a stamina meter, which is depleted by any actions. Basic attacks can string into combos, and blocks, well, block. Special attacks exist, and can hit hard but drain nearly all your stamina-you're best sticking to basic combos and blocking. Characters gain a fiery blue aura, allowing them to deal and soak twice the regular damage.
The game has a few glitches and downsides aside from the slow first years of a new game (the game goes through the 4th month of the arcade's 16th year). While you can research and develop superior versions of the games you have, custom names are lost between play sessions. I had a 1,000+ point fighting game developed, but it lost it's \"Final Boss\" name before my last session. Character models sometimes duplicate; at one point I had two superheroes running around (think red Power Ranger). Working toward one of the Star levels requires you to have 13-14 of the special \"layouts\", but the game reads that it's more tournaments or custom games instead (the game released a year ago; it's obvious Kairosoft just ported the game, uploaded it, then moved to their next project). Some character sprites are similar or have the same name-there are two female \"preschooler\" characters that look totally different.
If some of your customers become regulars, you can test their mettle in fighting game tournaments. Crush the competition with crazy combos and knock out your opponents with a flurry of fists! If you rise from the fray victorious, more and more customers will pile into your arcade!
You can fine-tune and tweak your arcade as much as you want, with everything from racing games to dance games, photo booths and food stands! Even the strength of your crane games' claws and the rate at which coins are won is under your control. Utilize all these features and customize to your heart's content!
Pocket Arcade Story DX will take you back to the 90s when the arcade machines made the 8x or 9x generations excited and crazy for a while. Coming to this game, you will be able to recreate the landscape of an old-style electronic shop. Instead of immersing yourself in fun with your friends through games on consoles, now you will have the opportunity to become a manager of a small electronic shop and take on another job.
In addition to being the manager of an electronic shop, you can also participate in exciting fighting battles with games inspired by the games in the arcade machines. You can play all kinds of games, and you will meet other opponents in 2v2 battles according to the rules of arcade games. This is an opportunity for you to replay the games that once made waves that you have not experienced before.
The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Let's get this out of the way first: Yes it is, during tournaments. Your player tend to have a crap AI that you have to tell the player what to do constantly, and that depletes a \"stamina bar\". If the bar gets depleted your player's fighter become stunned for a bit. The computer side's AI is far more competent and do not have a \"stamina bar\" to bog him/her down. It becomes extremely egregious in the final tournament in that the computer's fighters have a permanent power boost... and your player's fighter doesn't. Defeat Means Friendship: Rivals who've lost to you in tournaments will become patrons of your arcade and player-side A.I.s. Expy: The first three fighter characters you'd most likely encounter in the game in fighting mode are Ryuchiro, Speedy Joe and Chunchun- expies of Ryu, Guile and Chun-Li respectively. Freemium: DX. It's a free download, but to unlock the rest of the game a one-time in-game payment must be made to unlock the ability to play for longer than 3 years and/or progress further in tournaments. Leeroy Jenkins: Several of the player-side AI can be this, especially if they hadn't been trained in mixer events at all. Which makes it even harder to win a tournament. Lightning Bruiser: Secretary. She moves fast, and hits hard. Market-Based Title: The original title in Japanese is Game Center Club. It was changed to Pocket Arcade Story due to the rest of the world being more familiar with Kairosoft's Story naming scheme and due to Game Center being the Japanese Gratuitous English term for arcade. New Game Plus: When you complete a 16-year game, you get to restart over with your player-side AI retaining their level of training and unlocked themes. Unfortunately, unlocked game machines are re-locked. Nintendo Hard: Both the simulation and fighting aspect of the game. On the simulation aspect, you need to maintain your balance sheet to make sure you don't fall into the red. On the fighting aspect, you need to match the computer AI against a capable fighter of your own, and intervene in such a way that you don't deplete your stamina and still win in the end. The Power of Friendship: A gameplay mechanic. You need to form bonds between the various patrons to your arcade by holding events and participating in high score tournaments to unlock new game machines, vendors, vending machines and deco for your arcade. Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: The special move of Guile expy Speedy-Joe. Shoryuken: Both Bun-Chan and the unimaginatively-named Ryuchiro have this as their special move. Stone Wall: Mochipon-Jet. While his attacks are on the weak side and he's slow, his high level of defense more than makes up for it. Updated Re-release: Pocket Arcade Story DX, which was released just two years after the game was ported to Android and iOS but a decade after the game originated for NTT DoCoMo i-Mode Phones.
Pocket Arcade Story is coming to Nintendo Switch next week thanks to publisher Kairosoft. Previously only available for iOS and Android devices, the arcade simulation game can soon be played as a console experience. Preloading will be available from the Nintendo eShop on April 23rd for a launch on April 30th, and the price is officially set at $14.
Kairosoft's latest title on Android, Pocket Arcade Story, seems to go in a similar direction. Instead of creating games and platforms, you're managing an arcade center but you'll also have to develop the hardware and software to keep it running.
